I agree with the October-November recommendations completely, but also don't miss this little monster:

Awwww, jglynn, you stopped just before my first show, 11/25/79. It's got a great Shakedown-> Bertha and a beautiful Stella Blue complete with a nice outro...

This is the tour where I got started:

5/9/79 - Binghamton - sweat-drenched and 10 feet from Jerry
5/13/79 - Mother's Day in Maine
9/4/79 - Phil nearly brings down MSG roof
10/25/79 - fine Shakedown in New Haven
10/31/79 - China Cat opener on Halloween
11/5 and 6/79 - I seem to remember a great Candyman on the 6th

I occasionally rec the 11/2/79 as a hidden gem, this was my second GD show and although I have little recollection of it I do recall the very quiet opening and thinking "wow it's not very loud", soon enough the sound system was turned on and things rapidly fell into place.

This is still my all time favorite Mississippi Half Step > Franklin's Tower.

Oh, and aside from the Car ride and the sandy parking lot I have pretty much no recollection of my very first GD show which was in Cape Cod . . .

I'll shock you all and keep this short. I will back up JG on his picks. There a few other fine shows, but these are enough to keep your chair very frightened for a long time.

Just curious... how is that last Donna/keith show at Oakland in Feb? The setlist looks great but one guy said they were in "let's get this over with" motions

I don't know much about 1979 AUDs, but you have to start here. It's a top 2 or 3 from the year, and it's a pretty good recording. Dick made a fine selection.

I'm no '79 expert but I'd start with late October/early November. Couple of teriffic shows from Cape Cod, a kickin' Buffalo show, Nassau...lots of good stuff in there.
